Waste Recycling
Recycling is the process for converting used materials in to new products for the prevention of producing waste. This leads to the reduction of air pollution and water pollution. Recycling has taken our environment out of the risk of mass pollution and the production of greenhouse. This process is the key factor, which is used in the modern techniques for waste management and is the third in the waste management 3R’s i.e. Reduce, Reuse and Recycle of waste.
Not all materials are recyclable but a number of materials are included in the list of recyclable products like; glass, plastic, paper, textiles, metals and electronics. The materials, which are capable for being recycled, are collected then sorted out and reprocessed and new products are formed. For example, if you have some sort of LED or any old household appliance then it could be recycled and can be transformed in to new product for reuse.
Analysis of cost-benefit
Almost all authorities are in favor of recycling for not only environmental impacts but also for economical well-being. Although recycling is more profitable in densely populated enlighten areas but its awareness is rapidly growing into less populated cities. It must be mentioned here that there are a number of requirements to be met for the economical feasibility and effectiveness and not just environmental benefit alone. The first thing out of such requirements is a constant and adequate supply of recyclables to processing plants, a up and running system for extracting recyclables out of waste stream, a locally located factory to process recyclables like that of The Initiates Plc which is the first and currently only e-waste processing plant in West Africa and enforceable government legislation.
A number of economists are of the view that there must be an adequate involvement of government in recycling projects. Legislation must be put in place by authorities to make the industry more viable in Nigeria and Africa as a whole. A very crucial part is the constant supply of recyclates to the recycling plants.
Collecting Recyclates
There are number of systems used in collecting recyclates. The two main categories which are usually used mostly in Nigeria include:
- Drop-off Centers and;
- Buy-Back Centers
The Initiates Plc., operates a state of the art complete e-waste recycling facility which is first in West Africa. It is an ‘end-to-end’ e-waste recycling facility which processes all types of e-waste adhering to high HSE standards and in compliance with relevant government regulations in Nigeria.
E-Waste is any Electrical & Electronics Equipment (EEE) that has reached its end of life and ready to be discarded.
